It is that time of year when many of us turn our attention to the upcoming holidays. Included in the holiday festivities is the very American activity of gift giving. It has become quite an industry in our country and has consumed lots of time and money over the past years for many of us.
As Christians, we struggle to keep all the holiday gift-giving and festivities from distracting us from the true meaning of the holidays. But, it can be tough.
We would like to suggest a couple of ways that you can keep the true spirit of Christmas in your mind while busily going about your holiday gift shopping.
Two Easy Ways to Put the Spirit of Christmas Back into Your Gift Giving
Immediately following Thanksgiving, there are two days that have become the focus of the holiday gift buying activity. One of them is BlackFriday, and the other is CyberMonday.
One of the ways that you can bring the spirit of Christmas into your gift buying activity is to participate in GivingTuesday, which immediately follows CyberMonday. With GivingTuesday, you can set aside and give a little of the gift-giving budget to help those less fortunate. It is an international day of giving, and Water@Work Ministry is participating. We encourage you to learn more about GivingTuesday, and if possible, support the cause. You can learn more about this initiative here.
The second way that you can keep the spirit of Christmas during the shopping season is to make online purchases of Christmas gifts through the Amazon.com website.
Amazon has a unique program called AmazonSmile that allows you to designate a charity to receive a percentage of the purchase that you make through the shopping portal. It is a small amount that Amazon contributes to the charity for each of your purchases, but over time it adds up. As of August of this year, Amazon has donated over $32 million to charities worldwide through this program.
But you must make the purchase through smile.amazon.com. That is how the donation will be triggered.
And it’s super easy to participate. When you go to the smile.amazon.com website, you will log into your Amazon account and be given the opportunity to select your charity – hopefully, Water@Work Ministry.
Then you go about your normal online shopping – only now, with each purchase, Amazon contributes 0.5% of the dollar value of your eligible purchase to your designated charity.
How’s that for helping to keep the spirit of the Christmas season in your busy gift shopping activity. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
